Dundee Book Festival is often associated with bestselling authors, thought-provoking discussions and literary conversations.
But for younger readers and families, the festival also offers something equally important: the opportunity to discover a lifelong love of stories.
Returning from 19 to 21 June, this year’s festival includes a strong programme of family-friendly events designed to entertain, inspire and encourage creativity, with tickets priced at just £5 for many sessions.
From beloved children’s authors to comic-book chaos and early years activities, there are plenty of opportunities for young people to get involved.
Meet one of Scotland’s most loved children’s authors
Award-winning author and illustrator Debi Gliori will appear at Steps Theatre on 19 June.
Known for classics including No Matter What and Stormy Night, Gliori has spent decades creating stories that resonate with children and adults alike.
Her books explore friendship, family, emotions and resilience through memorable characters and beautiful illustrations, making her appearance one of the standout family events of the festival.
Enter the magical worlds of Ross MacKenzie
Fantasy fans are in for a treat on 21 June when bestselling author Ross MacKenzie takes audiences behind the scenes of his imaginative literary worlds.
Best known for The Nowhere Emporium series, MacKenzie has become one of Scotland’s most successful children’s authors, earning multiple awards and a devoted readership.
During the session, audiences will hear about his creative process, the inspiration behind his stories and the role Scottish folklore plays in shaping his work.
For aspiring young writers, it offers a fascinating glimpse into how fantasy worlds are created.
Poetry and play for younger children
Families with pre-school children can also head outside The McManus to visit the Mobile National Poetry Library.
As part of the A Poet in Every Port programme, Bookbug and Rug Rhymes will host an interactive session filled with songs, storytelling and playful language activities.
Designed specifically for younger children, the session encourages imagination, confidence and creativity through rhythm, rhyme and participation.
Comics, creativity and plenty of laughs
One of the most eagerly anticipated family events comes from Dundee’s own Beano.
As Dennis the Menace celebrates his 75th birthday, Beano’s Mike Stirling and Craig Graham will reveal some of the secrets behind creating one of Britain’s most iconic comics.
Young readers will gain an insight into how comic strips are developed while enjoying a session packed with humour, creativity and plenty of mischief.
For many families, it will be a chance to celebrate a character who has entertained generations.
A festival that grows with its readers
One of the most impressive aspects of Dundee Book Festival is the way it caters for different ages and interests.
Children can discover their first favourite author, teenagers can explore new genres and adults can reconnect with the joy of reading alongside their families.
The result is a festival that feels genuinely inclusive, offering opportunities for people at every stage of their reading journey.
Making memories through stories
Books have a unique ability to inspire imagination, spark curiosity and create shared experiences between generations.
Through author talks, creative workshops, poetry sessions and comic-book fun, Dundee Book Festival 2026 offers families the chance to make those memories together.
Whether you’re introducing a child to their first literary event or encouraging an existing love of reading, this year’s festival provides plenty of reasons to get involved.
