Sometimes the best getaways are the ones closest to home.
Nestled on Dundee’s picturesque waterfront, the Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa has become one of the city’s best-known destinations for both visitors and locals looking for a little luxury.
Overlooking Victoria Dock, the four-star hotel which opened up in 2003 played an important role during the early years of Dundee’s waterfront regeneration.
Developed by Scottish entrepreneur Norman Springford, the hotel was conceived as a flagship addition to the transforming docklands, introducing contemporary accommodation to the area.
Today, the hotel offers far more than somewhere to stay. Home to Yu Spa, Quayside Bar & Grill and sweeping views across City Quay, it has become a destination in its own right for relaxation, dining and wellbeing.
Recently, I spent an afternoon experiencing exactly that.
A visit to Yu Spa

Stepping into Yu Spa, the pace immediately changes.
The bustle of the city outside quickly fades away, replaced by soft lighting, calming music and an atmosphere designed to help you completely switch off. It’s easy to forget you’re only a short walk from Dundee city centre.
My visit included the ESPA Inner Calm Massage – a personalised aromatherapy treatment that focuses on easing physical tension while encouraging complete mental relaxation.
Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all experience, the treatment begins by tailoring aromatic oil blends to suit your individual needs, whether that’s helping you unwind, feel refreshed or restore a sense of balance.
Using premium ESPA oils and skincare products, the massage works deeply into tired muscles while the carefully selected fragrances create a wonderfully calming environment.
As someone whose schedule is now packed with meetings, events and deadlines, it proved to be the perfect opportunity to properly disconnect for an hour or so.
The treatment was expertly delivered, never feeling rushed, and struck that ideal balance between therapeutic massage and complete relaxation. By the end, I felt noticeably refreshed – physically and mentally.
What really stood out throughout the visit, however, was the staff. They were absolutely amazing and took great care of me from start to finish. I don’t normally do spa visits or treatments, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I felt genuinely welcomed and completely at ease throughout.
That warmth and attentiveness made a huge difference and really elevated the whole experience.
Yu Spa itself offers much more than treatments alone. Guests can also enjoy the indoor swimming pool, hydrotherapy spa pool, sauna, steam room and fully equipped gym, making it easy to turn a single treatment into an afternoon dedicated entirely to wellbeing.
A leisurely afternoon tea

After the spa came another highlight of the visit – afternoon tea at the hotel’s Quayside Bar & Grill.
I’ve visited Quayside many times over the years, often for meetings, family outings or lunch overlooking the waterfront, so it was lovely to experience another side of its offering.
The afternoon tea offers an impressive selection without feeling overwhelming.
Freshly prepared sandwiches included honey roast ham with mustard mayonnaise, tuna with sweet chilli mayonnaise, free-range egg mayonnaise with spring onion and chicken with tikka mayonnaise and lettuce.
The savoury selection continued with a delicious sausage roll served alongside onion chutney and a perfectly crisp haggis bonbon – a nice Scottish touch that added something a little different.
No afternoon tea would be complete without a freshly baked scone, served warm with clotted cream and jam, while the sweet selection rounded things off beautifully.
A rich chocolate brownie, vibrant strawberry tart, classic carrot cake and delicate passionfruit crème brûlée each brought something different to the table.
With the experience, you are accompanied by a choice of Twinings teas, ranging from traditional English Breakfast and Earl Grey to peppermint, camomile, green tea and fruit infusions, alongside freshly brewed coffee.
It was an indulgent but beautifully balanced afternoon tea that felt every bit as much an experience as simply a meal.
Relaxing by the pool

Following the treatment, I also spent some time enjoying the spa’s leisure facilities.
The swimming pool may not be enormous, but what it perhaps lacks in size it more than makes up for in atmosphere. It feels intimate, peaceful and never overly busy, making it an ideal place to continue unwinding after a treatment.
Alongside the pool, guests have access to the bubbling hydrotherapy spa pool which was amazing, I felt totally relaxed. There is also a sauna and steam room, creating a complete wellness experience under one roof.
It’s the sort of environment where you can quite happily lose track of time – exactly what a spa should achieve.
You don’t always need to travel hundreds of miles for a relaxing escape.
Yu Spa at the Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa offers exactly the kind of reset many of us need from time to time, combining excellent treatments, welcoming facilities and a peaceful atmosphere in one of Dundee’s most recognisable waterfront locations.
If you’re treating yourself to a massage, planning a spa day with friends, enjoying afternoon tea or simply looking for a few hours away from everyday life, it’s an experience that’s well worth considering.
For me, it was a wonderful reminder that some of Dundee’s finest places to unwind have been right on our doorstep all along.
