Storm Amy: First named storm of the season is set to batter Scotland – with possible disruption for Dundee commuters

ree

The first named storm of the season is heading for Scotland, and Dundee could face strong winds, heavy rain and potential travel disruption over the weekend.

Storm Amy is forecast to sweep in on Friday afternoon, bringing gusts of up to 80mph in parts of northern and western Scotland. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for both wind and rain, covering much of the country, including Tayside.

The warnings remain in place from midday Friday until late on Saturday night.

With winds expected to reach 50-60mph across lower-lying areas and potentially stronger gusts along exposed coasts and bridges, Dundee commuters are being warned to prepare for possible disruption on the Tay Road Bridge.

Restrictions on high-sided vehicles are likely, and the bridge could face partial or full closures if gusts strengthen. Motorists are being urged to check travel updates before setting off.

As well as the wind, Amy is set to bring heavy downpours on Friday, with the Met Office warning of 20-30mm of rain across many parts of Scotland, and up to 50mm in higher ground.

After several wet days already this week, forecasters say the additional rainfall increases the risk of localised flooding. Dundee’s riverside areas, roads and paths could be affected if water levels rise further.

The strong winds and rain may also cause power cuts, fallen trees, and disruption to transport networks across Scotland.

Rail passengers travelling through Tayside and the wider region are advised to check with operators before starting their journeys.

Forecasters say the most destructive winds will ease by Saturday morning, though conditions will remain blustery through the day. By Sunday, Amy is expected to move further into the North Sea, leaving behind a mix of sunshine and showers but much calmer weather.
