One of Dundee’s most famous video games is celebrating a major milestone this year. Lemmings, the puzzle game that helped put the city on the global gaming map, has turned 35.
Originally developed in Dundee by DMA Design, the studio that would later become Rockstar North, Lemmings was released in 1991 and quickly became a worldwide hit.
The game challenged players to guide small green-haired creatures through dangerous levels by assigning them different skills. Its simple concept, catchy music and clever level design made it an instant classic.
Now, a new documentary has been released to mark the anniversary. Created by onaretrotip and available to watch for free on YouTube, the film looks back at how the game was made and why it became such a cultural phenomenon.
It features interviews with key figures involved in its creation, including Scott Johnston, Russell Kay and Tim Wright.
The documentary explores the early days of game development in Dundee, when small teams were creating titles that would go on to influence the entire industry. Lemmings sold millions of copies across multiple platforms and remains one of the best-known puzzle games of all time.
The anniversary is another reminder of the city’s role in shaping the global gaming scene.
As the documentary gains views online, fans old and new are being invited to rediscover the game that started it all. Thirty-five years on, Lemmings is still marching forward.
