The future of HMS Unicorn has moved a step closer after the Project Safe Haven initiative received an increased funding commitment through the Tay Cities Region Deal.
The updated programme includes £5.7 million for Project Safe Haven, an increase from the previously allocated £5.5 million, as part of a wider £27 million investment package supporting tourism projects across the region.
Project Safe Haven is a multi-year initiative designed to secure the long-term future of HMS Unicorn, one of the world’s oldest ships still afloat and one of Dundee’s most important historic attractions.
The ambitious plans include relocating the vessel into a purpose-built dock and creating new visitor facilities designed to improve accessibility and enhance the overall experience for guests.
Alongside safeguarding the ship itself, the project includes a fully accessible learning space, a new café and retail facilities, helping transform the attraction into a year-round destination for visitors.
Supporters of the project believe it will increase visitor numbers, create new jobs and contribute to Dundee’s long-term economic growth while protecting an internationally significant piece of maritime heritage.
The increased commitment represents another positive step for Project Safe Haven as efforts continue to secure the future of HMS Unicorn and create a new chapter in the vessel’s more than 200-year story.
