A long-vacant garage on East Dock Street could be given a new lease of life, with electric coach operator Ember lodging plans to transform it into a 24/7 depot.
The application, received by Dundee City Council on 6 August and validated on 15 August, proposes a change of use from the former Arnold Clark vehicle service centre into a charging hub and maintenance base for Ember’s growing fleet.
If approved, the site would become a dedicated facility for parking, charging and maintaining electric buses, opposite Xplore Dundee’s headquarters. Ember says this will allow it to expand its services across Scotland while improving efficiency.
The derelict building has been shut for over a year, and the proposals would bring new activity back to a key stretch of East Dock Street. The site would include charging points, workshop space and bays for servicing vehicles, helping Dundee build on its reputation as a leader in sustainable transport.
For Dundee, the move would represent more than just a depot. It would mean the reuse of a neglected site, the growth of electric bus infrastructure, and further backing for Ember’s existing long-distance routes linking Dundee to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, as well as its newer connection to Aberdeen Airport.
The planning application is currently registered with Dundee City Council and will be considered in the coming months.
