A spectacular 19-night cruise will set sail from Dundee next summer, taking passengers all the way to the Mediterranean to witness one of the biggest astronomical events of 2027.

Ambassador Cruise Line have announced their Mediterranean Moments & Solar Eclipse cruise for Ambition which will depart the Port of Dundee on July 27, 2027, before embarking on a mammoth journey through Portugal, Gibraltar and Spain.

The highlight will come on August 2 when Ambition calls at Gibraltar - placing passengers in the path of totality sweeping across southern Spain and North Africa that day.

It means Dundonians will be able to leave from their home city and travel directly to one of the best parts of Europe from which to experience totality, without having to fly.

From Dundee to the Mediterranean

After leaving Dundee, Ambition will spend three days at sea before making its first stop at Leixões for Oporto in Portugal on July 31.

The ship will then head south towards Gibraltar, arriving on the day of the eclipse on August 2.

From there, the Mediterranean adventure continues with consecutive stops at Almeria, Alicante, Valencia and Ibiza between August 3 and 6.

Passengers will then visit the Spanish North African city of Ceuta on August 8, followed by Cadiz on August 9.

The final port of call will be Vigo on August 11, which also offers access to Santiago de Compostela, before Ambition begins the journey north and eventually arrives back in Dundee on August 15.

In total, the cruise features nine ports of call across three countries.

A total solar eclipse from Gibraltar

The timing of the Gibraltar visit makes this far more than a conventional Mediterranean cruise.

On August 2, 2027, a total solar eclipse will cross parts of southern Spain and North Africa, with the Moon completely obscuring the Sun for observers within the path of totality.

Gibraltar is set to experience the eclipse, giving passengers the extraordinary opportunity to combine a Mediterranean holiday with one of nature’s greatest spectacles.

It comes less than a year after Dundee experienced a 91% partial solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, when hundreds gathered at Broughty Castle to watch the event.

While Dundee will have to wait until October 7, 2135 for its next total solar eclipse, the new cruise provides a considerably earlier opportunity for people in the city to experience totality - with the journey beginning and ending on the River Tay.

Spain, Portugal and North Africa

Beyond the eclipse, the itinerary takes in a sizeable portion of the Iberian Peninsula and western Mediterranean.

In Almeria, passengers can explore the historic Alcazaba fortress and the landscapes of the Tabernas Desert, while Valencia offers landmarks including the City of Arts and Sciences alongside the home of paella.

The voyage also includes Ibiza, Alicante and ancient Cadiz, while Ceuta offers a distinctive combination of Spanish and North African culture on the opposite side of the Strait of Gibraltar.

Ambassador describes the voyage as an opportunity to experience the “contrasts of Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar” while combining history and culture with the solar eclipse.

Prices are currently advertised from £2,879 per person, with onboard credit of up to £600 depending on cabin category.

The 19-night Mediterranean Moments & Solar Eclipse cruise departs Dundee on July 27, 2027 and returns on August 15.
