Dundee Museum of Transport to close Market Mews site on 31 October

Dundee Museum of Transport has announced that it will close the doors of its Market Mews home later this year as preparations continue for the museum’s biggest move yet.

The popular Dundee attraction will welcome visitors for the final time at Market Mews on 31 October 2026, bringing an end to a 12-year chapter in the museum’s history.

It is not the end of Dundee Museum of Transport, however, with the organisation preparing to move into its new permanent home at the historic Maryfield Tram Depot, which is expected to open as a museum in Autumn 2027.

The restored former tram depot will provide a significantly larger home for Dundee’s transport collection and represents the culmination of a major project to bring the historic building back into use.

Announcing the news, Dundee Museum of Transport said: “After an incredible 12 years, we will be closing our museum on Market Mews on October 31, 2026 as we get ready for our next exciting chapter – our brand-new museum.”

The museum stressed that the closure will not mean its activities disappearing from Dundee during the period between the two buildings.

Instead, the team plans to take the museum out into communities across the city, with events, activities and other opportunities for people to get involved planned ahead of the Maryfield opening.

The museum added: “While our doors will be closed, this definitely isn’t goodbye. Our new museum at the restored Maryfield Tram Depot will open Autumn 2027, and there’s plenty happening between now and then.

“Over the coming months, you’ll see us out and about in the community, taking the museum to you and planning lots of exciting events, activities and opportunities to get involved.”

Market Mews has been home to Dundee Museum of Transport since 2014 and has seen the attraction develop substantially during its 12 years at the site.

Its final months will therefore offer Dundonians and visitors one last opportunity to experience the museum in its current form before the doors close at the end of October.

That includes the museum’s current Oor Trams: Dundee’s Tram Era Remembered exhibition, which also runs until 31 October and explores the history of the city’s once-extensive tram network.

The timing is particularly fitting as 2026 marks 70 years since Dundee’s final passenger trams ran through the city in October 1956 — meaning the museum will close its Market Mews chapter during the anniversary month of the end of Dundee’s original tram era.

Attention will then turn fully towards Maryfield and the transformation of the former tram depot into a new heritage attraction.

Dundee Museum of Transport described the transition simply: “One chapter is coming to an end, but an exciting new one is just beginning.”
