Dundee is facing a wet and windy weekend as two named storms bring unsettled weather across Scotland, prompting the Met Office to issue yellow weather warnings for heavy rain and strong winds.

Storm Austen is bringing persistent rain to Dundee and surrounding areas on Friday 23 October, before a second weather system, Storm Boelo, brings the threat of strong winds across Scotland on Saturday and Sunday.

The warnings cover Dundee, Angus, Fife, Perth and Kinross and other parts of the country, with the Met Office advising residents to prepare for possible travel disruption.

Yellow rain warning issued for Dundee and Tayside

A yellow weather warning for rain is in place from 7am until 11.59pm on Friday 23 October, covering Dundee and neighbouring areas including Angus, Fife, Perth, Blairgowrie, Kinross and Auchterarder.

The Met Office has warned that Storm Austen could bring prolonged periods of heavy rainfall, with between 20mm and 40mm expected widely across the warning area.

Some locations could receive between 60mm and 80mm, increasing the possibility of localised flooding and difficult travelling conditions.

Heavy rain is expected to move across eastern Scotland during Friday before gradually becoming lighter and clearing later in the evening.

Although widespread disruption is not guaranteed, motorists and public transport passengers are being encouraged to check conditions before travelling.

Strong winds expected across Scotland this weekend

The unsettled weather is expected to continue into the weekend as Storm Boelo approaches Scotland.

A separate yellow warning for wind has been issued across mainland Scotland, the Western Isles and Orkney, with the latest Met Office guidance placing it in effect from 6pm on Saturday 24 October until 9pm on Sunday 25 October.

Forecasters are warning of widespread gusts of 55mph to 65mph, with winds potentially reaching 70mph to 80mph in some exposed coastal areas.

The strongest winds are expected to develop during Saturday evening and overnight into Sunday, before gradually easing later in the weekend.

The conditions could lead to disruption on roads and railways, particularly where fallen branches or debris affect travel.

What should people in Dundee expect?

For Dundee and the surrounding area, Friday’s main concern is persistent rainfall, followed by the possibility of strong winds during the weekend.

Residents are being encouraged to take extra care when travelling, secure loose outdoor items and keep an eye on any changes to the weather warnings.

Those living in areas vulnerable to flooding should also monitor conditions as the rain moves through.

The Met Office regularly updates its warnings as forecasts develop, meaning the areas affected and timings may change.

The latest weather warnings and advice can be found on the Met Office website.

With two named storms affecting the UK in quick succession, Dundee is set for an unsettled end to the week as October’s autumn weather continues.
