Storm Austen & Boelo: Dundee flood gates to close along Riverside ahead of stormy weekend

Selected flood gates along Dundee’s waterfront are set to close this afternoon as the city prepares for a weekend of heavy rain and strong winds.

Dundee City Council have confirmed that precautionary closures will take place between the Tay Rail Bridge and Bridgeview Station, with the gates expected to remain closed from Friday afternoon (23 October) until Monday (26 October).

As a result, access to the popular Riverside footpath may be restricted at certain locations over the weekend.

Precautionary measures ahead of stormy weather

The closures come as Dundee and the rest of Scotland prepare for the arrival of Storm Austen and Storm Boelo, with several weather warnings issued for the coming days.

A yellow warning for rain is in place across Dundee and surrounding areas throughout Friday, while a separate yellow flooding warning covers Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, an amber warning for wind has been issued across Scotland from 9pm on Saturday until 9pm on Sunday, alongside a wider yellow wind warning beginning at midday on Saturday.

The decision to close selected flood gates is a precautionary measure ahead of the forecast conditions, helping protect the waterfront from potential flooding.

Riverside footpath access may be affected

People planning to walk, run or cycle along Riverside over the weekend should be aware that some sections of the footpath may be inaccessible while the flood gates are closed.

The restrictions are expected to remain in place until Monday, although the exact reopening time has not been specified.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to follow any temporary signage and avoid attempting to access closed sections of the waterfront.

With heavy rain and strong winds expected across Dundee, people are also advised to check the latest weather warnings before heading out.

The latest information is available through the Met Office and SEPA.
