Dundee has been named the best city in the UK to visit in spring, according to a new study by train operator LNER.
The research looked at 88 of the UK’s most populated towns and cities and ranked them using a mix of environmental and activity-based factors. These included historical weather data, green and blue space, land and woodland cover, and the number of walking trails in each location.
The city came out on top ahead of Maidstone, Telford and Aberdeen, giving Dundee another positive tourism boost as the warmer months begin. LNER highlighted the city as one of the country’s most inspiring places for an outdoor spring trip, pointing to its mix of nature, waterfront views and visitor attractions.
Among the locations singled out were the University of Dundee Botanic Garden, Dundee Law, Camperdown Park and V&A Dundee. LNER’s spring travel guide says Dundee “truly shines in spring” and describes it as Scotland’s sunniest city, with a strong mix of outdoor space and cultural attractions that make it ideal for a seasonal day out.
The ranking also reflects the city’s wider natural assets. Dundee City Council said more than 40% of the city is publicly accessible greenspace, helping make it one of the greenest cities in Scotland. That balance between urban attractions and open space appears to have played a major part in Dundee securing the top spot.
Council leaders have welcomed the result, describing it as a strong endorsement of Dundee’s transport links and range of attractions. Councillor Steven Rome said he hoped both locals and visitors would use the improving weather as a chance to get outside and explore more of what the city has to offer, while Councillor Heather Anderson said the survey recognised the quality and variety of Dundee’s outdoor spaces.
For Dundee, the study is another sign of how the city continues to build its reputation as a destination that blends culture, scenery and accessibility.
