A new online project is giving people around the world the chance to leave their mark on a digital Earth map, pixel by pixel – and Dundee has been quick to take part.

Wplace, a creative platform where users can collectively draw small artworks on a giant interactive globe, is already showcasing colourful tributes to Dundee’s culture and heritage.

From football to video games, and even comic book favourites, the city is being celebrated in a uniquely modern way.

Lemmings, Denki Games and DMA Design make up some of the video game components on the platform.

Among the most eye-catching creations are nods to Dundee’s football scene. Both Dundee FC and Dundee United have been represented, with pixel badges and colours capturing the pride of the clubs’ fans.

Elsewhere, a line of pixel Lemmings – a playful homage to the classic video game series created in Dundee – can be seen marching across the map, instantly recognisable to anyone familiar with the city’s gaming legacy.

The city’s comic book history is also shining through. Although technically placed in Fife due to limited space in Dundee itself, The Beano’s Dennis the Menace has found a spot on the map.

It serves as a reminder of DC Thomson’s long-standing influence in Dundee, where the much-loved comic continues to be produced.

In addition, the region’s thriving games industry has inspired other contributions. The DMA Design logo, a nod to the company that later became Rockstar North, is proudly displayed, alongside the 4J Studios logo, recognising the team behind the console editions of Minecraft. Both highlight Dundee’s reputation as a global hub for video games.

For locals, Wplace is fast becoming an entertaining way to see the city’s creativity represented on an international stage.

For visitors, it offers a snapshot of Dundee’s cultural strengths – sport, comics, and gaming – all condensed into miniature works of pixel art.
