Discovery Point project receives major funding boost to safeguard RRS Discovery

Plans to secure the future of Dundee’s iconic RRS Discovery have received a significant boost after funding for the Discovery Point Transformed project was doubled through the Tay Cities Region Deal.

The updated regional programme includes a £5 million commitment towards the project, up from the original £2.5 million allocation, as part of a wider £27 million investment package focused on tourism and culture across the Tay region.

Discovery Point Transformed is centred around a long-term mission to conserve the historic Antarctic exploration ship for future generations while enhancing the visitor experience at one of Scotland’s most important heritage attractions.

A key element of the project involves major conservation works to protect the vessel, including the installation of a new supportive cradle designed to prevent structural deterioration that experts have warned could become critical within the next decade.

The investment will help ensure that the ship remains accessible to local people and visitors from around the world while preserving one of Dundee’s most internationally recognised landmarks.

The funding boost represents one of the most significant developments for Discovery Point in recent years and comes as Dundee Heritage Trust continues to evolve the attraction through new experiences, exhibitions and conservation initiatives.

By securing the future of the RRS Discovery, the project aims to ensure the vessel remains at the heart of Dundee’s waterfront for the next century and beyond.
