V&A Dundee turns 8 today!

One of Dundee’s most recognisable landmarks is celebrating its eighth birthday today, marking another milestone for Scotland’s design museum.

V&A Dundee officially opened its doors to the public on 15 September 2018, transforming the city’s waterfront and becoming the first V&A museum anywhere in the world outside London.

Designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the striking building sits on the banks of the River Tay and was inspired by Scotland’s dramatic eastern cliffs. Since opening, it has become an instantly recognisable part of Dundee’s skyline and welcomed visitors from across Scotland and around the world.

Over the past eight years, V&A Dundee has brought a huge range of exhibitions to the city, celebrating everything from fashion, architecture and photography to video games, music and the changing world of design.

The museum has also played a major role in Dundee’s continuing cultural story, sitting at the heart of the £1 billion transformation of the waterfront and helping showcase the city internationally as the UK’s only UNESCO City of Design.

And there is plenty still to come. Eight years after those doors first opened, V&A Dundee continues to bring major exhibitions and events to the city while providing a spectacular gateway to Dundee for those arriving by rail or along the waterfront.

From that unforgettable opening weekend in 2018 to everything that has followed, it has certainly been quite the eight years.
