International Women’s Day takes place every year on 8 March and is a global moment to celebrate the achievements of women while recognising the challenges that still exist.
Dundee has long been known as “She Town”, a nickname that reflects the city’s history of strong female leadership from the jute mills to modern science, culture and business.
Across the city this year, a range of events are taking place that celebrate women’s voices, creativity and lived experiences.
From music and festivals to important conversations around recovery and wellbeing, here is a guide to some of the events marking International Women’s Day in Dundee.
Cailleach Festival at Canvas Dundee
One of the biggest celebrations happening in Dundee this year is the Cailleach Festival, organised by local brewery 71 Brewing and hosted at Canvas.
The festival is a food, drink and arts celebration centred around women-led businesses and creatives. Visitors will be able to enjoy guest beers, cocktails, street food and live music throughout the day while discovering companies and artists led by women across Scotland.
More than a dozen breweries, distilleries and food vendors are expected to take part, alongside live music performances and creative showcases. The event takes its name from the Cailleach, a powerful figure from Scottish folklore, and aims to shine a spotlight on women shaping the creative industries today.

International Women’s Day choir performance
One of the most uplifting events taking place is an evening choir performance celebrating the voices and stories of women found in scripture.
Hosted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Dundee, the performance will bring together singers to deliver a powerful programme of choral music.
The evening aims to celebrate women of the past while highlighting the voices of women today through music and storytelling.
Organisers say the event will be a chance for the community to come together for an inspiring evening filled with harmony, reflection and celebration.

Giving to Gain – Women, Harm, and Recovery in Scotland
Not all International Women’s Day events are celebrations alone. Some focus on important conversations around the challenges women face.
“Giving to Gain – Women, Harm, and Recovery in Scotland” is a national online event organised by the Scottish Recovery Consortium.
The session will share research and insights from women across Scotland who have been affected by drug and alcohol harm.
The event will bring together women with lived experience, practitioners, policymakers and organisations to explore what is currently working, what needs to change and how collaboration can improve support for women in recovery.
