The familiar sound of the Wellgate Clock has returned to the heart of Dundee, bringing joy to locals after what seemed like years of silence.
The 45-year-old timepiece, perched upon the top floor of the Wellgate Centre, had fallen silent for some time, sparking concern and nostalgia among Dundonians.
Earlier this month, Dundee Culture highlighted the issue in a social media post, prompting a wave of comments from residents who remembered the clock's iconic hourly and quarterly chimes.
To the delight of many, the clock has now been restored and is chiming once again. Visitors to the area, including those at Dundee Central Library, have reported hearing the full suite of chimes loud and clear - a sound that hasn’t been heard in years.
“It’s an absolute joy to hear it again,” one Dundee Culture comment showed. “The hour chimes and quarter-hour melodies took me right back. It's such a comforting and familiar part of Dundee life.”
The Wellgate Clock, installed in the late 1970s, has long been a beloved feature of the city centre. For generations, its ornate design and reliable chimes marked time for shoppers, workers, and library-goers.
While its silence was met with sadness, the restoration has stirred new appreciation for this longstanding symbol of Dundee.
No official statement has yet been made about the repair, but its return to operation suggests quiet maintenance work behind the scenes.
As one of the city’s most recognisable timepieces, the Wellgate Clock’s revival is a welcome sound in the streets once more - ticking in time with Dundee’s ever-evolving story.
