Storm Bram: Dundee’s Christmas market closes due to impending storm

ree

Dundee’s brand new Christmas in the Square event faced its first major challenge today as organisers were forced to close the attraction ahead of Storm Bram’s arrival.

The festive market, which made its debut in City Square this month, shut for the day as strong winds and heavy rain were forecast to hit the city.

The Met Office has issued an 18 hour yellow warning for wind across Dundee and the surrounding region, with gusts expected to exceed 60mph.

The storm is also set to bring prolonged periods of rain, prompting concerns about slippery surfaces, flying debris and difficult travel conditions. Organisers said the closure was a necessary precaution to ensure public safety.

The new market had quickly become a popular addition to Dundee’s festive calendar, offering a mix of food stalls, seasonal shopping and funfair rides. Its colourful setup, including the Ferris wheel, helter skelter and Alpine Bar, has brought an extra buzz to City Square since opening in early December.

Today, however, the site remained closed as teams secured the area ahead of the storm.

Many visitors hoping to enjoy the market expressed disappointment, but most acknowledged the need for caution given the severe weather warnings. With winds of this strength, even well-secured structures and equipment can become hazardous, especially in open public spaces.

Transport disruption is also expected across the region, with the strong winds and rain posing risks on roads and bridges. The Tay Road Bridge very likely will enforce restrictions if gusts intensify, while drivers have been urged to take extra care on exposed routes.

Organisers have confirmed that the closure is temporary and that Christmas in the Square is expected to reopen tomorrow after Storm Bram has passed and safety checks have been completed.

Despite today’s setback, the event remains scheduled to continue until 31 December, giving residents and visitors plenty more opportunities to enjoy Dundee’s newest festive experience once conditions improve.
