The RRS Discovery marked its 125th anniversary with a ceremonial champagne bottle smash, coinciding perfectly with the exact moment of its original launch.
This celebration took place at the ship's home port in Dundee, Scotland, where it was first launched on March 21, 1901.
The RRS Discovery is renowned for its role in Antarctic exploration, particularly during the British National Antarctic Expedition led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott from 1901 to 1904. The ship has since become a symbol of maritime history and scientific exploration, attracting visitors and researchers alike.
As the clock struck 3.20pm, guests gathered at the waterfront to witness the ceremonial smashing of a champagne bottle against the hull of the ship. This traditional gesture, often seen as a rite of passage for ships, was a fitting tribute to the vessel's storied past.
The ship continues to serve as a floating museum, providing insights into the challenges and triumphs of early explorers while inspiring new generations of scientists and adventurers.
