REVIEW: I became a cook at Wendy’s before it opened in Dundee - here’s how it went

Dundee’s new Wendy’s restaurant is set to open on Reform Street on 26 March, and ahead of the launch, we were given an early look inside - and a chance to try the menu for ourselves.

Stepping into the restaurant, the first thing that stands out is the atmosphere. The space has a welcoming, modern feel, with a layout that encourages people to sit in and enjoy their food rather than rush through.

A fun touch comes in the form of board games at the tables, including classics like Snakes and Ladders and Connect 4, adding something a bit different to the usual fast-food experience.

The opening also carries a sense of hope for the unit itself. The site was previously home to Fatburger and Fridays and Go, both of which closed, but Wendy’s arrival feels like a fresh start.

The brand has been a long-awaited addition for many in Dundee, and its presence on Reform Street is a notable moment for the city centre.

Making our own burgers

During the visit, we met members of the team, including Chloe and Aaron, who immediately stood out for their warmth and professionalism.

Chloe in particular helped guide us through a unique part of the experience - making our own burgers. It is not something you expect to do in a fast-food setting, but it quickly became one of the highlights.

As part of the session, we were able to cook our own meals. It was a fun and memorable experience, made even more special by the support from staff.

With cerebral palsy affecting movement on my left side, there were moments where tasks became physically difficult, but Chloe’s patience and willingness to help made all the difference.

It turned what could have been a challenge into something genuinely enjoyable.

I was joined by my brother Ross, and we decided to switch things up by making each other’s meals. Ross went for the Baconator, which I prepared, while I had the Wendy’s Single that he made for me.

Both burgers were cooked perfectly - although we might be slightly biased - with much of that down to the team who had everything prepped and ready to go.

The verdict

Baconator

A stacked, indulgent burger packed with beef and layers of crispy bacon, delivering a rich and satisfying flavour that lives up to its reputation.

The verdict: 3.5/5

Wendy’s Single

A more balanced option, combining a fresh beef patty with crisp toppings and a soft bun, creating a classic burger that feels well put together and easy to enjoy.

The verdict: 4/5

Loaded Baconator Fries

A hearty side topped with cheese and bacon, adding an extra layer of indulgence to the meal and pairing well with the burgers.

The verdict: 3.5/5

Frosty

A smooth and creamy dessert that rounds things off perfectly, offering a sweet and refreshing finish after a savoury meal.

The verdict: 4/5

Wendy’s is a strong addition to Dundee’s food scene

For me, Wendy’s coming to Dundee is a long time in the making. It is something I have been calling for since 2018, and after last visiting a branch in Florida with family around ten years ago, it is great to now have it here in the city.

One thing that I saw many comment on when it was announced was that it was “just another food joint” and another leap for Dundee to go into Americanisation. I disagree.

Wendy’s arrival means that Dundee has the biggest three fast food chains in the world and it is great for the local economy and a boost in jobs.

Again, when there is something new that happens, there is always a minority who complain about it, the same who want to see units filled which is exactly what this is doing. I really hope it’s a success because this unit really needs a success story.

If this first experience is anything to go by, it feels like a strong addition to Dundee’s food scene - and one that I hope many people will be keen to try for themselves.
