Poundland has announced that its Wellgate store will remain open, just weeks after plans to close the branch left staff and customers shocked.
The retailer had originally set October as the closure date, but in a surprise reversal, it confirmed that the store will continue trading. The decision has been met with relief and joy from both employees and shoppers, many of whom had voiced their support online.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, staff at the Dundee Poundland said they were “saved from store closure,” adding that the news was just as unexpected as the initial announcement to shut down. They thanked the community for its support, which they described as “truly humbling.”
The post read: “We can’t wait to breathe new life into the store and continue serving the community with pride. We really hope the support continues as we look forward to bringing even more value and great savings to Dundonian residents.”
The team also promised that, despite the uncertainty of the past month, their smiles and spirits never faded. As part of the reopening, the store will close temporarily for about a week to reset and prepare for what staff have described as a “big return with fantastic savings.”
The news has sparked warm reactions across Dundee, with many locals sharing their happiness that the store, a familiar presence in the Wellgate, will remain part of the city centre shopping scene.
For staff, who had been facing redundancy, the announcement marks a significant turnaround. For customers, it means that a popular and affordable high street option is here to stay.
