A long-standing Dundee shop is set to close its doors this autumn, marking the end of an era for one of the Wellgate Centre’s most familiar names.

Poundland has confirmed that its store in the shopping centre will shut on Saturday 11 October 2025.

The discount retailer has been a fixture in the Wellgate for more than two decades, serving generations of customers and employing hundreds of staff over the years.

The closure has come as a surprise to many, including the team themselves, who described the announcement as a “real shock”.

In a statement on their Facebook page, the Dundee Poundland team said they had been “proud to be part of the Wellgate Centre” for more than 20 years.

They added: “Serving thousands of wonderful customers and working alongside hundreds of truly fantastic colleagues has been an honour. So many of you have become more than just customers – you’ve become friends and regulars we’ll never forget.”

The heartfelt message also praised the support the store has received since news of the closure broke, saying the “kindness, encouragement and warm words” from the public had meant the world to staff. “They’ve reminded us just how special Dundee is, and how lucky we’ve been to be part of it,” the post continued.

Poundland staff have pledged to continue serving shoppers with “a laugh, a smile, and our very best service” right up until the final day in October. However, the closure has also prompted concern for the future of employees, with the store urging local businesses to consider taking on members of their team.

The statement added: “If any local employers are looking for new team members, please reach out. The colleagues I’ve had the honour of working with here are some of the most dedicated, hardworking and caring people you could hope to meet – they would be an asset to any business.”

The closure is the latest change for the Wellgate Centre, which has seen several major names depart in recent years as retail shifts continue to reshape city centres. For many Dundonians, the loss of Poundland will leave a noticeable gap in the heart of the shopping centre.
