There is big news for one of Dundee’s most iconic landmarks!

Fresh details and images about Project Safe Haven have just been revealed in The Courier, offering a glimpse into the next steps of preserving the HMS Unicorn—one of the world’s oldest surviving ships.

One of the major updates is the planned relocation of the HMS Unicorn to the East Graving Dock as part of the project’s second phase, expected to kick off this year.

This move would involve placing the ship on a custom-built cradle to better protect it from the elements and prevent further damage.

This could be a game-changer for the long-term conservation of the ship, offering a safer, more sustainable environment while keeping it accessible for future generations.

Looking further ahead, the project also includes building a temporary visitor centre made from recycled modular buildings and shipping containers. It’s a creative, eco-friendly way to welcome visitors while showcasing the work being done to protect the ship.

Eventually, the plan is to establish a permanent maritime heritage site, giving the Unicorn a proper home and creating an amazing cultural space that celebrates Dundee’s rich maritime history.
