Dundee’s historic Mills Observatory has officially reopened its doors for a brand new season, marking a special milestone as it celebrates its 90th anniversary.

The landmark on Balgay Hill has enjoyed a surge in popularity over the past year, with visitor numbers up by 120 per cent. Now, with its autumn and winter programme underway, staff are preparing to welcome even more people to explore the wonders of the night sky.

Founded in 1935, Mills Observatory is the only full-time public observatory in the UK and has been a place of inspiration for generations. Over the years it has introduced countless Dundonians to astronomy, from casual stargazers to young people who have gone on to careers in science.

Special events to mark 90th year

This anniversary season will be marked by a series of events, beginning with a special talk from Professor Catherine Heymans, the Astronomer Royal for Scotland, at Steps Theatre on 27 October. She will discuss her passion for astronomy and highlight the importance of places like Mills in making science accessible to all.

The Observatory itself has also had a refresh, with new interior design by Rhianne Connelly creating a brighter and more welcoming space.

Visitors can look forward to public viewings of the Moon, planets and distant galaxies through its historic telescope, as well as family-friendly activities and workshops.

Staff say they hope the 90th anniversary will not only celebrate the Observatory’s past but also inspire its future. With Dundee increasingly recognised as a city of science, design and culture, Mills Observatory remains a shining beacon that connects the city to the stars.
