Mills Observatory has just secured a funding boost from Culture & Business Scotland

Mills Observatory has received a new wave of funding to enhance its visitor experience, following a landmark season that has firmly re-established its role in the city’s cultural and scientific life.
The latest investment of £5,000 from Culture & Business Scotland, through its Culture & Business Fund, will support the transformation of the Observatory’s first-floor family area into a bright, interactive space.
The redevelopment will include space-themed games, craft activities, hands-on challenges, and a new ‘Story of Space’ wall highlighting Scotland’s growing influence in the global space sector and Dundee’s expanding role within it.
This new funding arrives ahead of the Observatory’s 90th anniversary celebrations and follows a remarkable turnaround in fortunes.
The historic venue was earmarked for closure just over a year ago, but was saved thanks to crucial long-term investment from local aerospace engineering firm STAR-Dundee.
Their five-year pledge, secured by Leisure & Culture Dundee (LACD), has not only safeguarded core operations but helped unlock further opportunities for growth and development.
The 2024–25 season has since gone on to become the best on record for the Observatory, marked by a significant resurgence in visitor numbers, public engagement, and programming.
This renewed momentum has led to wider recognition and collaborations, including the Observatory being announced as a host venue for this year’s Dundee Book Festival later this month.
A key driver behind the Observatory’s revival has been its partnership with Dundee Culture during the 2024–25 season.
The collaboration played a major role in raising awareness, connecting the Observatory with new audiences, and spotlighting its heritage and relevance in today’s cultural landscape.
