Follow Dundee Culture for the best up to date information on Storm Floris. This page will continue to be updated as more information comes in throughout the storm.
Dundee is experiencing severe disruption today as Storm Floris passes over the city, bringing winds of up to 65mph, with 80+mph being reported on the Tay Road Bridge.
The Met Office upgraded its warning from yellow to amber, warning of a “danger to life” due to flying debris and falling trees.
The amber warning is in effect from 10am to 10pm, with a yellow alert in place before and after – from 6am to 10am, and again from 10pm to midnight.
Winds between 50-70mph are hitting inland areas, with 80-90mph gusts recorded in coastal and elevated locations. In Dundee, gusts of up to 65mph are affecting travel and public services.
The strongest winds initially struck western coastal areas this morning, and are now pushing across north-eastern Scotland as the storm continues its path.

I’ll continue to add updates to this page if anything significant develops, but live coverage has now concluded.

❤️ Dundee Culture sends a message of thanks to those out and about during the storm
“❤️❤️❤️ Massive shoutout to all the essential workers who’ve been out and about doing their jobs in today’s wild weather across Dundee, the local area, and beyond!
From postal workers and delivery drivers to public transport staff, emergency services, carers, council crews, and everyone in between – your efforts don’t go unnoticed. While many of us stayed indoors, either by working at home or in offices, you were out there keeping things going, often in difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions.
I’ve had a few messages come in, including one from Bev who shared the video I posted earlier – she told me her Royal Mail driver picked up her business parcels via Perth and didn’t expect them to manage, as the bridge was closed at the time. Also to the delivery driver who went out of their way to deliver our lunch today, thank you! That’s real dedication, and just one example of the extra miles people are going to today.
A special shoutout to Mila White who has so kindly been helping me with updates on the live feed today. Her support and quick info-sharing have made a real difference – it means so much, especially on a day like this!
Thank you to everyone making a difference out there - you’re legends”

🗣️ Dundee City Council provide updates
“Dundee City Council is continuing to monitor and respond to the impacts of Storm Floris, with an Amber weather warning for very strong winds remaining in place until 11pm on Monday, August 4.
A number of trees have come down across the city. Please continue to follow all safety advice, including exercising extra caution when travelling, while this weather warning is in force.
Gusts of up to 80mph have been recorded this afternoon on the Tay Road Bridge, but winds are forecast to ease overnight.
Council and partner services are therefore expected to operate as normal on August 5.
A small number of bin collections had to be postponed today for safety reasons.
These collections will now take place on August 5.
Affected households should put out their wheelie bins or food waste caddies from 7.30am. All scheduled Tuesday collections should also be presented as normal.
Baldovie and Riverside Recycling Centres are also expected to reopen on Tuesday, as will public toilets.”

How does the Met Office warning system work?
The weather warning for Storm Floris is still in place until 11pm tonight. But how does the Met Office warning system work?
The Met Office warning system is designed to inform the public and emergency services about the potential impacts of severe weather across the UK. Warnings are issued when weather conditions are likely to cause disruption or pose a risk to life. These alerts help people prepare in advance and stay safe during periods of extreme weather.
This system uses a colour-coded approach: yellow, amber, and red. A yellow warning advises people to be aware and stay updated, as disruption is possible. An amber warning, like the one currently issued for parts of the country due to Storm Floris, signals a higher likelihood of disruption and potential danger to life and property. A red warning, the most severe, is issued when extreme weather is expected to cause significant and widespread impact.
Storm Floris has triggered an amber warning due to forecasts of strong winds, with the Met Office warning of possible travel delays, power cuts, and damage to buildings and trees. The amber level reflects the increased risk and encourages people to take precautions, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow local guidance.
The Met Office issues warnings for various severe weather events including wind, rain, snow, ice, thunderstorms, and extreme heat. These are based not only on the expected conditions, but also their potential impact on people, transport, and infrastructure. With Storm Floris developing quickly, forecasts are being updated regularly to ensure people have the latest information.

How Tay Road Bridge closures are decided during storms
Tay Road Bridge restrictions are guided by wind speed thresholds and real-time safety assessments. Here's how decisions are made:
At 45mph:❌ Closed to double-decker buses
At 60mph:❌ Closed to all vehicles except cars and single-decker buses❌ Walkway closed to pedestrians and cyclists
At 80mph:❌ Bridge closed to all vehicles
🟡 Reopening after high winds: After winds hit 80mph, the bridge will only reopen once gusts have been consistently dropping for around 30 minutes, backed by site-specific Met Office forecasts. A structural safety check is also carried out before reopening to the public.
Who can and cannot cross when restrictions are in place?
✅ Permitted when open to cars and single-decker buses only:
Standard cars (no trailers or loaded roof racks)
Unmodified transit vans
Single-decker buses
Ambulances (case-by-case, depending on emergency and agreed with Bridge Control)
❌ Not permitted:
High-sided HGVs (rigid or articulated)
Tankers, tippers, and car transporters
Furniture vans, curtain-sided vehicles, and modified transit vans
Vehicles with trailers or caravans
Motorcycles, cyclists, and 3-wheeled cars
Any vehicle judged unsafe by the duty supervisor
👣 The central walkway is closed to pedestrians and cyclists when only cars and single-decker buses are allowed. Bridge operators urge all drivers to respect restrictions – they are in place for everyone's safety.

❌ GOAL Academy - all sessions off

⚡ Update from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks
"Storm Floris is now moving across Scotland, bringing with it sustained storm-force winds. Gusts are forecast to reach 100mph in some exposed areas, and will persist overnight in the north east.
We’re expecting this severe summer storm to affect power supplies, and we’re already well prepared, with hundreds of extra team members ready to reconnect homes and repair network damage as soon as it’s safe to do so.
We’ve also got more people on shift, to answer your questions over the phone or via social media, and we’ve already sent 100,000 texts to our more vulnerable customers with help and advice.
The worst of the winds are expected later this afternoon and into the evening – and we want to reassure you we’re ready to respond.
Please remember - if you see any damage to our equipment, stay back, don’t touch it and instead report it to us directly by calling 105, or via our Power Track website, and our engineers will investigate as soon as possible."

How and why are storms named in the UK?
In the UK, storms are named to make it easier for the public and media to communicate warnings and stay informed.
The system, introduced in 2015 by the Met Office in partnership with Met Éireann (Ireland’s national weather service) and later joined by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, aims to raise awareness of severe weather events and help people take action to stay safe.
Storms are given names when they are likely to cause medium or high impacts, such as travel disruption, damage to buildings, power cuts or risk to life.
The names are selected in advance, using suggestions from the public, and released as a list covering a 12-month period from September to August, which aligns with the traditional storm season.
The list follows an alphabetical order but excludes certain letters like Q, U, X, Y, and Z to ensure consistency with international naming practices.
Each year’s list includes a mix of male and female names, reflecting diversity and inclusivity.
The naming process has been shown to improve public engagement with warnings, making people more likely to take precautions when a storm has a clear, memorable name.
09:10
