For the first time in more than two decades – as Rockstar prepares to release Grand Theft Auto VI in May 2026, Dundee is reportedly once again involved in the development of a Grand Theft Auto game.
It all began in Dundee back in 1995, when local studio DMA Design started developing the first Grand Theft Auto.
Released in 1997, the top-down crime caper sparked what would become one of the most iconic and influential gaming franchises in history.
GTA 2 followed in 1999, also developed in Dundee, before the studio rebranded as Rockstar North and relocated to Edinburgh, ending Dundee’s direct involvement in the series.
Now, 26 years later, Dundee is reportedly back in the picture.
In 2020, Rockstar acquired Ruffian Games, a Dundee-based studio known for Crackdown 2 and contributions to the Halo series.
The studio was renamed Rockstar Dundee and integrated into Rockstar’s global network of development teams.
According to a recent report from FandomWire, GTA VI is the first game in the franchise to involve all of Rockstar’s worldwide studios – including Rockstar Dundee – in its development.
While Rockstar has not publicly outlined each studio’s specific contributions, FandomWire notes that over 6,000 developers across 10 studios are working collaboratively to bring the game to life, making it the most ambitious and unified GTA production to date.
As GTA 6 heads towards its highly anticipated release in May 2026, the spotlight has once again turned to Dundee – the city where it all began.
What started as a risky experiment by a Scottish team in the 90s has grown into a cultural phenomenon, and now, Dundee is reportedly helping bring the franchise’s most anticipated chapter to life.
For the local games industry – and for fans of the series – it’s a historic and fitting return.
