The first details of Dundee’s Mills Observatory 90th anniversary celebrations have been revealed – and it’s shaping up to be a special occasion for one of the city’s most loved landmarks.
Opening its doors back in 1935, the observatory has been part of Dundee’s skyline and community for generations, welcoming visitors from near and far to explore the night sky.
Now, as it turns 90, the city is getting ready to celebrate its legacy with a series of events this autumn.
Kicking things off will be a special talk by Scotland’s Astronomer Royal, Professor Catherine Heymans, taking place at the Steps Theatre.
The event, which is free, with a donation entry encouraged, will see one of the UK’s leading astrophysicists share her passion for the cosmos, exploring the big questions about our place in the Universe.
The 90th anniversary celebrations will shine a light on the observatory’s continued importance to Dundee – not just as a historic site, but as a place that continues to inspire curiosity and creativity among people of all ages.
More events are expected to follow in the months ahead, giving Dundonians plenty of opportunities to join in the celebrations and rediscover a local gem that’s been looking to the stars for nine decades.
Perched proudly on Balgay Hill, Mills Observatory remains one of Dundee’s most distinctive landmarks – and as it enters its 90th year, its story is still far from over.
