A bold new transport and leisure concept could transform one of Dundee’s busiest routes, with plans unveiled for a futuristic “Kingsway Monorail” stretching from west to east across the city.

The ambitious proposal would see an elevated monorail system running above the Kingsway, featuring a series of sleek, glass-fronted pods designed as moving restaurants, cafés and social spaces, which have been designed by Franklin and Benjamin Architects.

Travelling along the route, these pods would offer a completely new way to experience the city - combining transport with dining and entertainment.

At the heart of the concept are two landmark stations at either end of the route: Kingsway West and Kingsway East.

Kingsway West would be a striking, modern glass structure integrated into the surrounding landscape, with a monochrome design and even incorporating existing greenery into the station itself.

Positioned near the retail park, it would act as a western gateway to the network, blending architecture with the natural environment.

On the opposite side, Kingsway East would serve as the system’s centrepiece. Plans show a large circular glass dome built directly into the roundabout, housing a full shopping outlet inside. The station would act as both a transport hub and retail destination, with monorail lines branching out above the road from the dome.

The monorail itself would run above existing lamp posts, following the full length of the Kingsway. The pods - designed with a futuristic aesthetic - would glide along the track, offering panoramic views across Dundee while passengers dine, relax or travel between destinations.

Supporters of the concept say it could redefine how major roads are used in cities, turning a traditionally vehicle-dominated route into a multi-purpose corridor for leisure, transport and tourism.

While still at an early stage, the Kingsway Monorail has already sparked interest for its blend of practicality and imagination, with many seeing it as a potential landmark attraction as well as a new way to move across the city.

If realised, it would mark one of the most visually striking additions to Dundee’s infrastructure - and a completely new experience for both residents and visitors.
