Visitors to Dundee’s Mills Observatory will now be able to book a free slot to step inside its historic dome, as the landmark reopens for the 2025/26 winter season on Wednesday 1 October.
The new system allows visitors to secure a 30-minute time slot, available every half hour from 4pm until 9.30pm on opening nights. The move follows last year’s record-breaking season, which attracted more than 14,000 visitors, and is designed to reduce waiting times during busy periods. Entry to the lower level and outdoor viewing platform remains open without booking.
To celebrate the reopening, tickets for 1–10 October have now been released and can be booked for free at millsdome.eventbrite.co.uk.
Leisure & Culture Dundee hopes the change will make visits smoother and give more people the chance to enjoy uninterrupted views of the night sky through the observatory’s telescopes.
The reopening comes as Mills Observatory celebrates 90 years since first opening its doors, with a programme of anniversary events and activities set to be announced soon.
Anna Day, Head of Culture and Libraries at Leisure & Culture Dundee, said:
“Last season, we had an incredible response from visitors and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back to celebrate Mills Observatory’s 90th anniversary. For nine decades, it has inspired wonder, curiosity and a passion for science among visitors of all ages.”
As a preview ahead of reopening, a special one-night event, Summer Stars at Mills Observatory, will take place on Friday 19 September from 9pm until midnight. The evening is free and no booking is required.
Full details of the observatory’s winter schedule are available at leisureandculturedundee.com/culture/mills. Visitors should note that night sky viewing is weather dependent, with clear, dry skies required to operate the telescopes.
