Dundonians look back on golden era of record shops for Record Store Day

Record Store Day has sparked a wave of nostalgia in Dundee, with locals sharing memories of the city’s once-thriving record shop scene.

From Groucho’s to Rockpile, and Chalmers & Joy to I&N Records, people across the city have been reflecting on the places that shaped their love of music. For many, these shops were more than just retail spaces, becoming part of everyday life.

Groucho’s was among the most frequently mentioned, with many recalling visits as a weekly ritual. Some remembered heading straight there after arriving in the city, while others spoke of the characters behind the counter who made the experience unique.

Shops like Chalmers & Joy and Rockpile also featured heavily in memories, described as regular haunts throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Others pointed to stores like Our Price, Virgin Records and The Other Record Shop as key parts of Dundee’s music culture.

For some, the memories were tied to specific purchases, from first vinyl albums to rare finds. One recalled asking for a decades-old instrumental, only for staff to return moments later with the exact record.

The stories highlight how Dundee’s record shops once served as hubs for discovery, connection and community. While many of the stores are no longer around, their impact clearly remains.
