Dundee United booked their place in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa Conference League with a narrow but decisive win over UNA Strassen in Luxembourg.
Leading 1-0 from the first leg at Tannadice, United sealed progression with a 63rd-minute goal from Iurie Iovu. The Moldovan defender rose to meet a free-kick at the back post and guided his header into the net, putting the tie beyond the reach of the home side.
It marked Dundee United’s first victory away from home in European competition since 1997, when they beat CE Principat of Andorra. The result also meant the club had secured passage over two legs in continental competition for the first time in 28 years.
In front of nearly 1,000 travelling fans, United created several opportunities but also had to withstand pressure from Strassen, who were seeking their first goal in European football. Despite a few scares at the back, the Scottish side held firm.
The win means Dundee United will now face Austrian giants Rapid Vienna in the third qualifying round, with the first leg scheduled for next Thursday.
