Dundee’s role as a hub for gaming and technology has been given another boost, with Game Space in the city named as one of just 14 UK projects to benefit from new government funding.
The initiative, backed by £1 million from the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), aims to strengthen regional businesses and drive growth in the tech sector.
Two Scottish organisations have been chosen – Game Space in Dundee and ScotlandIS’ Future Ready programme.
For Dundee, this support means fresh opportunities for early-stage gaming companies. Game Space will use the funding to run workshops, provide guidance for start-ups, and help businesses attract new investment.
The programme is expected to give a platform to emerging talent, continuing the city’s long tradition of success in the global games industry.
Dundee is already known worldwide as the birthplace of Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings, and its cluster of studios, independent developers, and academic links through Abertay University have made it a leader in the field. The arrival of extra backing for Game Space builds on this foundation, aiming to ensure local creators have the tools and networks they need to grow.
It is not yet clear exactly how much of the £1m fund will be directed to Game Space, but DSIT has confirmed the money will help support at least 30 Scottish businesses in total. Alongside Dundee’s gaming community, the funding will also be channelled into peer-led networks for tech entrepreneurs and micro-businesses in rural areas through ScotlandIS.
Beyond Scotland, other initiatives to secure support include an entrepreneurship scheme in Lancashire and an artificial intelligence innovation challenge in Wales. But with Dundee singled out for its games sector, the investment further underlines the city’s importance as a driver of Scotland’s digital economy.
