The D’Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum is opening every Friday this summer.

The museum will be open every Friday afternoon during June, July and August, from 2pm to 4.30pm, offering visitors a chance to explore one of Dundee’s most fascinating collections.

The museum houses an array of specimens from around the world, including birds, fish, insects, mammals, and reptiles. And the best part is - it’s FREE for all!

Notable highlights include intricate glass sea creatures crafted by Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka and preserved specimens by Czech modeller Vaclav Fric. These items not only serve scientific purposes but are also celebrated for their artistic value.

The museum also boasts specimens from significant scientific expeditions, such as the HMS Challenger voyage (1872–76), the Dundee Antarctic Expedition (1892–93), and Ernest Shackleton’s Nimrod Expedition (1907–09).

Additionally, it features specimens of extinct species like the Huia and the Thylacine, underscoring its role in preserving biodiversity heritage.

Where can I access the museum?

Entry is via the main front door of the Carnelley Building, facing the back of the Tower Building. On arrival, visitors should ask at reception (just to the left as you enter) for directions to the museum.

Please note there are steps at the main entrance. A step-free route is available – visitors who require it are encouraged to contact the museum team before 1.30pm on the day of their visit by emailing museum@dundee.ac.uk or calling 01382 384310.

In addition to the regular Friday openings, the museum will also be open on select Saturdays this summer – 14 June, 12 July and 9 August.
