Dundee’s festive spirit has officially arrived in the heart of the city, as a traditional Christmas tree has been installed in City Square ahead of the annual lights switch-on next Sunday.
The large tree was delivered early this morning at around 7am, marking the first time since 2020 that a full-sized Christmas tree has stood in the city’s main civic space.
Its placement this year is also the closest it has ever been to the City Square itself, providing a new focal point for Dundee’s Christmas celebrations.
Residents have been quick to share their delight on social media, with many praising the decision to bring back a traditional tree after several years of alternative approaches.
The move is being described as a return to form for Dundee’s festive display, with one local saying it “finally feels like Christmas in the city again.”
A return to a traditional Christmas
The last time a traditional Christmas tree appeared in City Square was in 2020. In 2021, Dundee City Council opted for a “living Christmas tree” planted under the Old Steeple.

However, the tree failed to survive beyond its first year, sparking widespread criticism from Dundonians who called for the return of a more classic display.
In the following years, the city was represented by the Social Bite Christmas tree on Union Street, which also served as a hub for charitable giving during the festive season. While it proved popular, many locals still hoped for the return of the City Square tradition.
The return of the Christmas tree marks the start of Dundee’s festive calendar, which will culminate with the Dundee Christmas Lights Switch-On on Sunday, 16 November at 6pm.
The event will include live entertainment, a parade, and appearances from festive performers, with the hope of drawing crowds from across the region.
