It’s the end of an era for one of Dundee’s best-loved museums, as Dundee Museum of Transport enters its final week at Market Mews before preparing for an exciting new chapter in its history.

The museum will officially close its Market Mews premises on Saturday 31 October 2026, bringing an end to more than a decade of showcasing Dundee’s fascinating transport heritage at the site.

And with just days remaining, visitors have one final opportunity to explore the museum’s exhibitions, historic vehicles and collections before the doors close for the last time.

Saying goodbye to Market Mews

Since opening at Market Mews in 2014, Dundee Museum of Transport has become a popular attraction, celebrating the vehicles, people and stories that helped shape Dundee’s transport history.

From vintage buses and cars to historic trams and fascinating local artefacts, the museum has brought generations of Dundee’s transport heritage together under one roof.

Over the years, it has welcomed visitors of all ages, including families, transport enthusiasts and Dundonians keen to rediscover memories of the city’s past.

But as the museum prepares to leave Market Mews behind, attention is now turning towards an ambitious new future.

A new chapter at Maryfield Tram Depot

The museum is preparing to relocate to the historic Maryfield Tram Depot, a building which first opened in 1901 and played an important role in Dundee’s tram network.

The move will see the former depot transformed into a permanent home for the museum, bringing Dundee’s transport history back to a building with its own remarkable story.

Maryfield was once a major part of the city’s tram operations, with the final trams departing the depot in October 1956.

Now, 70 years later, the building is preparing to welcome transport heritage back through its doors with the public being able to access the building for the first time in its 125 year history.

The new museum is expected to open in 2027, offering an exciting opportunity to showcase its collections in a historic setting.

Museum appeals for support with historic relocation

Although the move to Maryfield represents a major step forward, relocating an entire transport museum is no small undertaking.

The museum faces the enormous challenge of carefully moving historic vehicles, exhibitions and thousands of objects from Market Mews to their new home.

To help make this possible, Dundee Museum of Transport has launched a public crowdfunder, inviting Dundonians and supporters of the city’s heritage to contribute towards the practical costs of the move.

Every donation, regardless of size, will help support the relocation and protect the museum’s collections for future generations.

The appeal is separate from public funding allocated towards the development of the museum’s new home and exhibition facilities.

Anyone wishing to support the move can donate through the museum’s official crowdfunder here: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/help-us-move-the-museum-to-maryfield.

One last chance to visit

With Market Mews closing on Saturday 31 October, this week marks the final opportunity to experience Dundee Museum of Transport in its current home.

For many visitors, the museum has become a familiar part of Dundee’s cultural landscape, preserving memories of the vehicles and transport networks that once connected communities across the city.

While saying goodbye to Market Mews will undoubtedly be an emotional moment, the move to Maryfield promises an exciting future for one of Dundee’s most important heritage attractions.

It’s the end of one chapter, but the beginning of another remarkable journey for Dundee Museum of Transport.

And as the museum prepares to close its doors at Market Mews for the final time, Dundonians are being encouraged to make one last visit and help support its journey to Maryfield.
