For generations of Dundonians, Dundee Crematorium has been a place of remembrance, reflection and saying goodbye to loved ones.

Now, one of the city’s most important places of remembrance is marking a remarkable milestone.

Last Wednesday (21 October 2026), marked exactly 90 years since the first cremation took place at Dundee Crematorium, beginning a history of supporting families across Dundee and the surrounding areas.

Since opening in 1936, the crematorium has become a familiar part of the city’s history, providing a peaceful setting where generations of families have gathered to remember and celebrate the lives of those closest to them.

And to mark its 90th anniversary, Dundee Crematorium is inviting the local community to help celebrate its history by sharing photographs, stories and memories from across the decades.

Nine decades of serving Dundee

Dundee Crematorium’s history began on 21 October 1936, when the first cremation took place at the newly established facility.

The first funeral directors to conduct a service were James Smeaton & Sons of Victoria Road, marking the beginning of what would become nine decades of supporting families during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Over the years, countless Dundonians have visited the crematorium and its Gardens of Remembrance, whether attending a funeral, remembering a family member or simply spending a quiet moment reflecting on someone they have lost.

Although Dundee has changed considerably since 1936, the crematorium has remained an important place for families and communities across the city.

Its significance is not simply in the number of years it has been operating, but in the personal memories and connections that generations of Dundonians have formed with the site.

A place of remembrance and reflection

For many families, Dundee Crematorium and its Gardens of Remembrance hold a deeply personal significance.

The gardens provide a setting for quiet reflection, while the crematorium itself has witnessed generations of families coming together to honour the lives of relatives, friends and loved ones.

Reflecting on the anniversary, Dundee Crematorium expressed its gratitude to the families who have placed their trust in its services throughout the past 90 years.

In its anniversary message, the crematorium said it felt honoured to have supported so many families across nine decades, recognising the importance of providing care, compassion and dignity during difficult times.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to continuing that support for future generations.

Dundee Crematorium appeals for historic photographs and memories

As part of the anniversary celebrations, Dundee Crematorium is hoping to uncover more of its history through the memories of local people.

The team is inviting Dundonians to share any old photographs, stories or recollections of the crematorium and its surrounding area.

These could include historic photographs showing how the site has changed, memories of the surrounding neighbourhood or stories connected to its place in Dundee’s history.

The appeal offers an opportunity to bring together a collection of personal memories that might otherwise be forgotten, helping tell the story of a place that has been part of Dundee for almost a century.

Anyone with photographs or stories to share is encouraged to get in touch with Dundee Crematorium.

Remembering the past while looking to the future

Ninety years is a remarkable milestone for any institution, particularly one that has played such a meaningful role in the lives of local families.

Since that first service in October 1936, Dundee Crematorium has continued to provide a place where people can come together to say goodbye, remember those they have lost and find moments of comfort.

Its anniversary is an opportunity not only to reflect on the crematorium’s history, but also to recognise the importance of the care and support it has provided to generations of Dundonians.

As Dundee Crematorium celebrates its 90th anniversary, the invitation is open for the people of Dundee to help preserve its history and share the memories that have shaped its story.
