Details have been confirmed of youth-focused projects across Dundee that will share around £1 million in UK Government funding, aimed at improving facilities and creating new opportunities for children and young people in the city.
The funding comes through the Community Facilities Challenge Fund, which invited local organisations to apply for support to upgrade buildings or deliver new capital projects.
The fund has been administered locally by Dundee City Council, with successful bids now being announced.
Projects receiving support include the renovation of a building in Mid Craigie to create a safe indoor and outdoor play centre for children with additional support needs at The Yard Scotland Yard Adventure Centre.
In Kirkton, a new pump track will be developed as part of a wider, community-led transformation of local greenspace, working alongside a new playpark and multi-use games area.
Schools and sports clubs are also set to benefit. Permanent floodlights will be installed at the astro pitch at St Paul’s Academy, allowing year-round use by sports clubs and community groups.
Dundee High Cricket Club will deliver a new outdoor three-lane cricket net facility to meet growing demand and strengthen junior programmes.
Further investment will see the Kanzen for Life Centre transformed into a community hub focused on health, wellbeing and improving life chances for young people and families.
Lochee Boys and Girls Club will expand its existing facilities to cope with rising demand for sport and wellbeing activities, while Showcase the Street will upgrade indoor sports pitches and introduce a new tech hub featuring multi-sport simulators and digital graffiti walls.
Council leaders recently visited Lochee Boys and Girls Club to see plans for the extension and discuss how the funding will support young people across the city.
The investment is intended to create welcoming, modern spaces that help young people become more active, build confidence and improve their physical and mental wellbeing.
The funding forms part of Dundee’s wider £20 million allocation under the former Levelling Up Partnership, now known as the Community Regeneration Partnership, delivered by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
Around £1 million of this has been specifically set aside for projects that encourage young people to take part in positive activities, learn new skills and help reduce anti-social behaviour.
