Dundee DJ and producer Hannah Laing has received one of BBC Radio 1’s top honours after her new single, Have You Ever Loved (Ellie) featuring Hannah Boleyn, was named the Hottest Record on Jack Saunders’ New Music Show.
The track, released on Thursday, marks one of the Dundonian’s most personal and deeply felt projects to date.
The song is a heartfelt tribute to her best friend, Ellie Scanlan, who passed away in July this year ahead of Hannah’s hometown festival, Doof in the Park.
Hannah, known for her high-energy sets and chart success, has spoken openly about the emotional meaning behind the track, which centres on the lyric: “Have you ever loved somebody the way I love you”.
Hannah has openly said that Ellie was like a sister to her, and the chorus reflects the closeness of a friendship that shaped her life both on and off the stage.
The single blends Hannah’s signature dance production with Hannah Boleyn’s haunting vocals, creating a poignant contrast of club euphoria and personal grief.
Listeners have already praised the track for its honesty and emotional depth, with many calling it Laing’s strongest work yet.
Its selection as Radio 1’s Hottest Record signals growing national attention, adding to a year where the Dundee artist has continued to rise as one of the UK’s most influential names in dance music.
The release also marks a turning point for Hannah, who has channelled a difficult loss into a piece of music that celebrates friendship, memory and love.
