Dundee Culture founder Andrew Batchelor has been featured as part of The Human Collective, an inspiring storytelling project celebrating people making a positive difference across Scotland, starting in Dundee and Fife.
The project, created by Leven-based photographer and storyteller Ryan Morris, shines a spotlight on individuals from all walks of life, sharing the personal stories behind the people helping shape their communities.
Through photography and in-depth interviews, The Human Collective aims to highlight positivity, passion and the impact local people have on those around them.
Speaking as part of the project, Andrew reflected on how Dundee Culture began more than a decade ago as a passion project while he was still at school.
Inspired by his late Auntie Lorraine’s love for Dundee, he created the Facebook page at the age of just 12 to help support the city’s UK City of Culture bid and showcase everything the city has to offer.
What started as a simple idea has since grown into one of Scotland’s largest independent local media platforms, reaching millions of people every month and promoting everything from major events and cultural attractions to local businesses, charities and community groups.
During the interview, Andrew spoke about his belief that Dundee deserves to be celebrated for its people just as much as its places. He explained that one of the platform’s biggest successes has been reconnecting former Dundonians with their hometown, while also helping others discover parts of the city they may never have visited before.
He also reflected on the successful campaign to help save Mills Observatory, describing it as one of his proudest achievements.
The campaign encouraged thousands of people to visit the observatory, resulting in record visitor numbers and helping secure investment which will keep the attraction open up to 2029.
Ryan praised Andrew’s work throughout the interview, describing him as “a fantastic ambassador for Dundee”.
The Human Collective continues to showcase inspiring stories from across Dundee and Fife, celebrating the people who quietly make a positive difference within their communities every day.
