Dundee Botanic Garden: 10,000 sign petition to save the beloved venue as campaign gains momentum

The campaign to save Dundee Botanic Garden has reached a major milestone after more than 10,000 people signed a petition opposing plans that could see the popular attraction close.

Support for the gardens has continued to grow since concerns first emerged over its future, with thousands of people from Dundee and beyond adding their names in a bid to protect one of the city’s most cherished green spaces.

The petition’s latest milestone has been welcomed by campaigners, who say the figure demonstrates the strength of public feeling towards the gardens and the important role they play within the community.

Dundee Culture has played a significant role in raising awareness of the campaign, first sharing the petition when it had attracted just six signatures.

Since then, the campaign has gained substantial momentum, with thousands of supporters adding their names and helping spread the message across social media and beyond.

Alongside promoting the petition, Dundee Culture has also been reaching out to local and national organisations, charities, horticultural bodies and other botanic gardens across the UK to seek advice, support and potential solutions that could help secure the attraction’s future.

The efforts draw on experience gained during the successful campaign to save Mills Observatory from closure in 2024.

That campaign saw widespread public backing, increased visitor numbers and ultimately helped secure a long-term future for the historic attraction.

Located on Riverside Drive, Dundee Botanic Garden has been a fixture of the city for decades, attracting visitors with its collection of plants, educational programmes, research activities and peaceful surroundings.

The growing number of signatures comes amid ongoing concerns over the future of the attraction, with many supporters arguing that closure would represent a significant loss not only for Dundee but for Scotland’s wider horticultural, environmental and educational sectors.

Campaigners have continued to encourage members of the public to sign the petition and share their support, with the latest total seen as a significant show of opposition to any plans that would see the gardens close.

Reaching 10,000 signatures marks one of the largest public responses to a local Dundee issue in recent years and highlights the determination of supporters to see the attraction remain open for future generations.

Momentum is continuing to build and supporters hope the growing public backing, combined with ongoing discussions with organisations across Scotland and beyond, will help identify a sustainable path forward for Dundee Botanic Garden and secure its future for generations to come.
