Dundee actor Brian Cox has voiced his support for Broughty Castle as its future remains uncertain

Hollywood star and proud Dundonian Brian Cox has spoken out in support of Broughty Castle as uncertainty grows over its future.

The Emmy Award-winning actor returned to his hometown to lend his voice to campaigners fighting to save the historic landmark from potential closure.

Funding for the castle, which houses a museum overlooking the River Tay, is under review by Dundee City Council as part of proposed budget cuts.

During his visit, Cox joined members of the newly formed Friends of Broughty Castle group and warned that losing the site would be a major blow to Dundee’s cultural identity.

“When I heard that Broughty Castle might shut I was shocked and angered,” Cox said.

“Dundee’s leaders cannot make yet another disastrous decision which further erodes our history.

Our heritage speaks of who we are as a people and as a city. While funding may be tight, creative solutions can and must be found.”

The Friends of Broughty Castle, currently seeking charitable status, hope to raise both awareness and money to help safeguard the site.

Their aim is to work alongside the council to secure long-term funding that would allow external investment and partnerships to be developed.

Chairman Martin Goodfellow stressed the importance of the castle not only as a symbol of Dundee’s past but also as a driver for tourism:

“Broughty Castle is one of our city’s greatest assets, and this is a perfect opportunity to build on the waterfront investment and the considerable potential for tourism growth,” he said.

“To close Broughty Castle would be a catastrophe for Dundee and for its people.”

The final decision on the future of the castle is expected later in the year when the council sets its budget.

In the meantime, locals and supporters are being encouraged to back the campaign through donations and by joining the Friends of Broughty Castle.
