Work is set to get underway on Dundee’s highly anticipated Mill Market Food Hall after the project received Building Warrant approval.

LJRH Architects announced the milestone this week, confirming construction will now begin at the historic Brown Street site following a consultation process with Dundee City Council.

The redevelopment will transform part of the former Tay Works jute mill into a vibrant street food market, bringing together independent food traders, social spaces and community events under one roof. The venue is expected to become Dundee’s first permanent street food hall and is planned to open later this year.

Sharing the update on social media, LJRH Architects said they were “excited” to have received Building Warrant approval and thanked Dundee City Council for its support throughout the process.

The practice added that construction is now beginning at the historic building following what it described as a constructive consultation period with the council.

It said the project aims to “breathe new life” into an important part of Dundee’s industrial heritage while creating a new destination for the city.

The latest milestone comes just weeks after the team behind Mill Market launched a search for independent street food traders interested in operating from the venue ahead of its opening. Businesses from across Scotland have been invited to submit proposals as work continues behind the scenes.

Once complete, Mill Market is expected to feature a range of independent food vendors alongside communal seating and event space, creating a new social hub within one of Dundee’s historic mill buildings.
