Visitors to Discovery Point in Dundee can now embark on an unforgettable journey to the icy heart of Antarctica — without ever leaving the city.

This week, the museum is welcoming the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust (NZAHT) and the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) as part of a UK-wide tour offering immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences.

Open from Thursday 8th May to Sunday 11th May, the new experiences are included with museum admission or an existing pass, with advance booking via Eventbrite strongly encouraged. The sessions are open to explorers aged 11 and over.

Using cutting-edge VR technology, two historic Antarctic sites are brought vividly to life. NZAHT’s Discovery Hut experience invites users to step inside Captain Scott’s famed shelter on Ross Island, built during the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901–1904.

As well as exploring the hut itself, participants can ride in a hydrogen balloon, feed huskies, meet penguins, and even join a sledging party — all while learning about the extraordinary challenges faced by early polar explorers.

Meanwhile, UKAHT’s A Frozen Night transports visitors back to the 1960s to Stonington Island, one of Britain’s earliest Antarctic bases.

The experience, based on a true story and narrated by those who lived and worked there, offers a gripping glimpse into life on the ice — from travelling inland by dog sled to surviving the extreme conditions of the Antarctic Peninsula.
