COMMENT: The Discover Dundee tour bus should extend to Broughty Ferry - even if it’s only on selected dates

ree

The Discover Dundee open-top tour bus is a brilliant initiative that gives visitors and locals alike a unique perspective of our ever-evolving city.

Operated by Xplore Dundee, it takes in some of the best sights the city centre has to offer – from the V&A Dundee and RRS Discovery to The McManus, the iconic DC Thomson building, and the sweeping views atop Dundee Law. But there’s one glaring omission from its route: Broughty Ferry.

As someone who has long advocated for greater connection between Dundee and the Ferry in terms of tourism, I find it bizarre that this seaside gem continues to be left off the map.

Yes, Xplore Dundee has previously cited cost as a reason not to extend the service eastward, but perhaps it’s time to think more creatively – and selectively – about how to make it work.

Rather than a daily extension, why not pilot a limited number of dates where the tour continues to the Ferry?

Whether that’s weekends in summer or during school holidays, it would allow Xplore Dundee to gauge interest and impact without overcommitting resources.

Because here’s the thing – including Broughty Ferry would add real value. With its charming streets, independent shops, and coastal feel, the Ferry already attracts its own crowd.

But add it to a tour experience and you open up the area to visitors who may never have otherwise made the trip. Sites like Broughty Castle are rich in history and offer stunning views across the Tay, while attractions like SaltDog Marine’s boat tours present something a little more adventurous – and distinctly local.

The tour bus already gives a well-rounded snapshot of Dundee’s urban heart, but including Broughty Ferry would present the city’s fuller identity – one that combines culture and coast, heritage and holiday. And let’s be honest, it would be a win for businesses in the Ferry too.

It’s not just a nice idea; it’s a strategic one. Trial it. Promote it. Let the people decide. Because if the aim is to showcase Dundee in all its diversity and dynamism, then Broughty Ferry deserves a seat on the top deck.
