Claypotts Castle is set to welcome visitors once again this summer, with Historic Environment Scotland confirming that open days will return following a successful run last year.

While exact dates have yet to be announced, the news has already been welcomed locally, with the historic site proving popular with visitors during its previous openings.

Located in Broughty Ferry, Claypotts Castle is one of the finest surviving examples of a late medieval tower house in Scotland. Built in the 16th century, the castle is known for its distinctive design, featuring two towers connected by a central block.

The castle was constructed around 1569 by John Strachan and remained in private hands for centuries before eventually coming under the care of the state. Its well-preserved structure offers a rare glimpse into domestic life during the period.

Unlike many castles of its time, Claypotts is noted for its symmetry and relatively comfortable layout, reflecting both defensive needs and residential use.

The return of open days gives residents and visitors another opportunity to explore one of Dundee’s hidden historical gems, with more details expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
