One of the UK’s biggest music and culture magazines, Clash, has paid tribute to the city where it all began – right here in Dundee.
In a recent feature reflecting on Justin Bieber’s surprise visit to the city, the publication affectionately wrote that “Dundee will always have a special place in our heart”, a nod to the magazine’s roots and ongoing admiration for its hometown.
The article, titled “Why Is Justin Bieber In Dundee? Because It’s Great!”, may have centred around the pop star’s recent filming of his new music video Bad Honey at the Abandon Ship bar, but it quickly turned into a heartfelt celebration of Dundee itself.
Writer Robin Murray praised the city’s creative spirit, music scene and community pride, portraying Dundee as a place brimming with talent and culture.
Clash highlighted the city’s musical hotspots including Assai Records, Thirteen Records and dance collective Le Freak Records, alongside mentions of homegrown talent like DJ Hannah Laing.
The piece also paid homage to Dundee’s thriving arts scene, from the DCA and Generator Projects to WASP Studios and the V&A Dundee, describing the city as a hub of innovation and imagination.
Beyond Bieber’s visit, the magazine reflected on how Dundee has often been underestimated despite its cultural strength.
“For all its creativity and community feel, Dundee tends to get a bad rep,” the article reads. “Justin Bieber’s visit is a chance for Dundee to get its moment in the sun for the right reasons.”
Founded in Dundee before growing into one of the UK’s most respected music titles, Clash has never forgotten where it came from. The publication’s continued affection for the city is clear, celebrating the same creative pulse that inspired its beginnings.
