Locals and visitors to Broughty Ferry are in for a fin-tastic treat later this month, as a special Dolphin Spotting event is set to take place at Broughty Castle Museum on Sunday 29 June, from 2pm to 5pm, to celebrate the start of Broughty Ferry Gala Week.

The free drop-in event, open to all ages, is hosted in partnership with the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) from the University of St Andrews.

With breathtaking views over the Tay Estuary, the castle grounds offer one of the best spots in Dundee for catching a glimpse of the area’s most iconic marine residents — the bottlenose dolphins.

Binoculars will be provided on the day, and experts from SMRU will be on hand to help visitors spot dolphins in the wild, as well as share insights into their behaviour, habitat, and conservation.

You’ll also discover how researchers identify individual dolphins by studying the unique shape of their dorsal fins — a key technique in tracking these intelligent creatures over time.

The event promises to be educational, fun, and family-friendly, making it a perfect Sunday afternoon activity for wildlife lovers and curious minds alike.

Whether you’re a lifelong local or just passing through, this is a chance to learn more about the resident dolphin population of the Firth of Tay, and maybe even witness them in action.

This special dolphin watch is part of a wider programme of summer activities at Broughty Castle, with more events still to come — including another dolphin-focused session on 12 August, led by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Trust.

The Dolphin Spotting event is supported by SaltDog Marine, Leisure & Culture Dundee, and the Sea Mammal Research Unit, and is sure to be a highlight of Gala Week. Just bring your curiosity — and keep your eyes on the water!
