Broughty Castle is preparing to close its doors for the winter, giving visitors one last chance to step inside the historic landmark before 19 October.
The 15th-century castle, which overlooks the River Tay, has long been a favourite spot for both locals and tourists. Inside, visitors can explore displays covering Dundee’s history, wildlife, and the arts. Admission is free, making it one of the city’s most accessible attractions.
The castle is currently open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm, and on Sundays from 12.30pm to 4pm. After 19 October, it will close until next spring.
To mark the end of the summer season, a special market weekend will take place on 18 and 19 October in the castle grounds by The Yard Market. The event promises a lively send-off, with stalls, food, and entertainment for all ages.
But questions remain over the castle’s future. Proposals to shut the attraction permanently were put forward last year as part of cost-cutting plans. While councillors delayed making a final decision, campaigners say the castle still needs long-term security and funding. High-profile figures, including actor Brian Cox, have backed calls to protect it.
For now, Broughty Castle stands as both a much-loved day out and a symbol of local heritage under pressure. Campaign groups continue to press for clearer commitments, but until then, its future remains uncertain.
