Abertay University has awarded Dundee-born actor and Hollywood star Brian Cox CBE an Honorary Degree during their summer graduation ceremony, held today at the Caird Hall.

Cox, who has had an illustrious career spanning more than 60 years across theatre, film, and television, was recognised for his outstanding contributions to the performing arts. From his early days at Dundee Repertory Theatre to his acclaimed performance as Logan Roy in HBO's Succession, Cox has become one of the most respected and recognisable actors of his generation.

"This is truly a great honour, and I mean that sincerely—especially in my hometown,” said Cox in his acceptance speech. “Abertay embodies something very Dundee: persistence. It’s all about perseverance, style, and class, which I deeply respect."

"Abertay has also played a significant role in putting Dundee on the global map through the video game industry, notably with the creation of Grand Theft Auto by graduates of the university. What happens here at Abertay makes it truly unique and special in the world of gaming.

“I’d like to thank Abertay profusely for this honour - I am genuinely grateful.”

Over 400 graduates from Abertay’s academic faculties joined Cox at the ceremony, marking the culmination of their studies and celebrating their academic achievements in front of family and friends.

Brian Cox’s career began in 1961 at Dundee Rep, and he went on to become a founding member of the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. His Hollywood breakthrough came in 1986 with Manhunter, and he has since starred in major films such as Braveheart, Adaptation, The Bourne Identity, Troy, 25th Hour, and X2: X-Men United.

Alongside international roles, Cox is also fondly remembered for playing local favourite Bob Servant and will soon return to the Dundee Rep stage in Make It Happen.

Professor Liz Bacon, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Abertay University, praised Cox’s contribution and his deep-rooted connection to the city.

“I am delighted to welcome Brian into the Abertay family. His dedication to his craft and the remarkable impact he has made across stage, film, and television are truly inspiring. His passionate support and unwavering pride in his hometown of Dundee resonate deeply with all of us at Abertay. We take great pride in being rooted in our local community and in our ongoing commitment to making a positive difference for the people who live here.

“Graduation is one of the most memorable days in the university calendar, and I am thrilled that we were able to celebrate the talents and achievements of our students on this special occasion.”
