Hollywood star Brian Cox has pledged his support to one of Dundee’s most iconic landmarks after becoming the first Patron of the Friends of Broughty Castle.
The Succession actor, who was born and raised in the city, accepted an invitation from the group’s chairman, Martin Goodfellow, following a recent visit to Broughty Castle Museum. Cox praised the dedication of the volunteers who have been campaigning to protect the site and safeguard its future.
In a message to the group, he described the castle as an important part of Dundee’s heritage. He wrote: “It was well worth it – worth it to witness the commitment you and your committee have to preserving the integrity of Broughty Castle. I would indeed be proud to accept patronage of the Castle.”
Although Cox now divides his time between the UK and the United States, he assured supporters he would lend his voice whenever possible. “Although my commitments mean that I split my time between the UK and the USA, I will do my best to be available when I can,” he said.
During his visit, Cox also urged Dundee City Council to secure funding to ensure the castle and its museum collection remain open to the public beyond this year. The site, which overlooks the River Tay, has long been a focal point of Broughty Ferry and attracts thousands of visitors annually.
The Friends of Broughty Castle welcomed the announcement, saying Cox’s patronage would shine a spotlight on their ongoing efforts. The group has been active in raising awareness of the castle’s importance and encouraging locals to get behind the campaign to keep it accessible.
Supporters are encouraged to follow the Friends of Broughty Castle’s social media pages for updates and information on how they can back the campaign. With one of Dundee’s most famous sons now on board, campaigners hope momentum will continue to build for the future of the historic landmark.
